Standard steel panel radiators are specified by type, single panel, single panel with convector fins, double panel with double convectors, and by height and length. Two radiators of identical size can have very different outputs depending on panel and fin configuration, which is why the specification matters more than the visible dimensions.

Vertical radiators solve the wall-space problem in hallways, kitchens and narrow rooms, though they generally need careful sizing because the available output for a given wall area differs from a horizontal panel. Designer and column radiators bring a different aesthetic and are common in period properties around Essex, where a modern white panel would look out of place.

Heated towel rails are standard in bathrooms but have modest heat output. In a colder bathroom, or one with a large window, a towel rail alone often will not do the job, and we will say so before fitting rather than after.

Every radiator except the one in the room containing the main thermostat should have a thermostatic radiator valve, allowing each room to be set independently. The lockshield valve at the other end is the balancing valve, and it is the one that determines whether flow is shared fairly across the system.

Balancing means adjusting those lockshields so the temperature drop across each radiator is correct and every room comes up to temperature at a similar rate. It is skipped surprisingly often, and it is the difference between a system that works and one that leaves the far bedroom cold.

Valve style also matters practically: angled, straight and corner valves suit different pipe entries, and where pipework comes through the floor rather than the wall the valve choice affects both appearance and future serviceability.

Moving a radiator means moving pipework, which is where most of the actual work sits. Depending on the floor construction, that can mean lifting boards, running new legs, or routing through a different wall. We plan the route at survey so the price reflects the real job.

Adding radiators, for an extension, loft conversion or garden room on the same system, increases the total demand. Before quoting we check that the boiler output and the pipework can support the addition. Where they cannot, we say so, and quote the alternative rather than fitting something that will disappoint you.

Where a radiator is being removed entirely, the circuit needs capping properly rather than leaving a dead leg, and the system needs re-balancing afterwards for the same reason as any other change.
